THE SNEAKY GOURMET
A New Regular Feature
The Sneaky Gourmet will be your culinary “Peeping Tom” sneaking from eatery to eatery, covertly and quietly. Chefs won’t know that someone is reporting back to you (sssshhhhhhh) or that the wait staff avoiding waiting on my table by standing in a corner or comatose after eating a staff meal with a pint of beer may find themselves mentioned as a “profile” without a name.
Our rating system will be from one to four yummies.
| 1 Yummy = |
 |
One yummy…no pass, two yummies, barely rating jail-house food status, three yummies, a passing grade and good service, four yummies, exceptional, and you could safely bring leftovers to your puppy at home. If you want a restaurant reviewed, contact info@mapcl.org. Maybe YOU can go yourself if the restaurant agrees to blindly let us send a MAPCLite. You will have to fill our a rating card, and make sure you have a good supply of antacid on hand at home…just in case.
Our two reviews for this week are at opposite ends of the spectrum. The first is a fine-dining establishment, and the second, a great breakfast joint. |
GOTHAM STEAK HOUSE
615 Seymour Street, Vancouver

Food is cooked perfectly. The fare is classic North American Steak,Seafood, Desserts fresh market fruit and cream. All vegetables are steamed to perfection, and the creamy mashed potatoes must be somewhere on the spiritually prohibited major-sin food list.
Service is exceptional. One awful fact – the washrooms are downstairs and miles away from your seating.
JIM’S CAFÉ
518 Sixth Street, New Westminster

Jim’s Café serves up a great big breakfast with all beef sausages, good potatoes and fresh toast. The coffee is good, the pricetag is cheap, and although there is no ambience to speak of………it’s hard to get a seat, and your best bet is really early, or just before closing. This is only a breakfast restaurant, so now evening brunch for you wild types.
