LOSERS IN LOVE
There are memorable Don Juans, hypnotic lovers portrayed in books, movies and maudlin poetry. Women it seems, in great literature liked the winners.
In real life, we seem to really love guys who just can’t get anything straight in the romance department. Consider Woody Allen. He never gets the girl and talks about it a lot on film. There are several television series now about homebound guys living with their grannies, their in-laws or basically hiring experts to unravel the mystery of romancing a female.
We laugh. We are somehow more comfortable with someone who, though relatively unsuccessful seems trustworthy.
North American society has compelled the best of our men to slick their hair back, become expert small talkers who use moribund, cookie cutter chatter to get closer to our women. For once, I have been told, by several women, they would truly like to meet a “real” guy. That should mean someone who doesn’t suck their stomach in, get their eyebrows waxed or memorize cheap lines from a dating website.
Real is good.
