Objective: To offer the participants of this program an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to become employed as yard and garden workers.

Skill Sets: This is an experiential learning program designed to address all learning styles, encourage productive social interactions and promote problem solving skills through team work.

Participants of this training program will learn how to safely and properly use a variety of garden tools, transplant annuals, identify weeds, practice various weeding techniques, plant seeds, deadhead flowers, practice safe lifting to prevent injury, maintain an outdoor compost bin and an introduction to pruning and shaping perennial shrubs.

In each training session participants will have an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they are learning through a series of stimulating exercises and through a work experience project at a predetermined garden site where they will weed and prepare the flower beds followed by planting summer annuals.

Upon completion of this program, participants will receive a certificate of completion and a golden trowel with their name on it as a souvenir.

Program Requirements: Each participant will be required to complete the entire training program in order to receive a certificate. If a day is missed the group will update that person on what they missed and staff will support him or her to get caught up. Regular handouts with information on what's being taught will be provided along with a binder to keep the handouts in.

Participants will be required to be responsible for their binders and to bring them along to each training session. Appropriate dress will be required for working out-doors and in possibly muddy conditions.
