Great emergencies and crises show us how much greater our vital resources
are than we had supposed.
- William James
Dear Readers, Colleagues and Families we care for;
Each day we begin and end our days with routines that are carefully developed
to promote efficiency, comfort and reassure us that all is well with the world.
The truth is that our lives can change within hours, minutes, and seconds.
Survivors of war, famine, disaster and calamity have one thing in common. In
addition to
the huge inner strength and bravery they demonstrate, they plan ahead. For
instance, how much fresh water and food do you have stored, do you have an
emergency kit,
can you swim, do you have an emergency kit and a spare pack of clothes somewhere?
Are you “portable” financially? Do you have six months worth of
salary in the bank, and do you have a stash of whatever medication you may
need and
a Medic Alert bracelet if you have intrinsic health issues or allergies?
Most
people don’t have all of these items, but here is a rundown from the
New York Times, Vancouver Sun and the Civil Disaster Authority. I will include
links

Risk reduction is a big part of surviving a disaster. Just remember the famous
words of Captain Smith, Commander of the Titanic:
"I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder.
I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern ship
building has gone beyond that."
