Community Support
 Working in Community Support your focus is to support and empower people with a wide range of developmental challenges, who often have physical disabilities as well. You are dedicated to help supported individuals overcome the barriers they face to integrate into the community and achieve their life goals. You have a strong background in mentoring / coaching of persons with developmental disabilities, and you are experienced in providing care to persons with mental and physical health challenges.
There are several exciting roles in Community Support as a Residential Care Worker, Life Skills Worker, Day Support /Vocational Worker or Behaviour Interventionist with MAPCL.

Residential Care Worker
Works as a member of a team in supporting individuals living in MAPCL homes. Enables supported persons to identify, articulate and follow through with their choices both on a daily and long term basis with respect to relationships, community involvement, communication, home life, and personal care. Supports individuals in a respectful manner that meets their needs for safety, comfort, privacy and dignity and enhances their quality of life.
Residential Care Workers work primarily at the residence of the people she/he was hired to support. The worker will also be required to assist the individuals in attending activities in a variety of community locations. The hours of work are generally in the morning, evening, nights and on weekends.
Education and Qualifications
- A degree in human services or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of education and experience
- Minimum two years experience in working with people who live with mental challenges
- a strong commitment to the philosophy of people with challenges living and working in the community
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team setting, with an emphasis on leadership, self-initiative, patience, maturity and tact
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Knowledge of the local community’s resources and services provided by the Ministry of Children and Family Development
- Non-violent Crisis Intervention training
- Some knowledge of alternate methods of communication
- Clean driving record;
- Class 5 driver’s license, for some positions unrestricted class 4 driver’s license
- Current Emergency 1st Aid and CPR Certificate
- Current TB test
- A strong commitment to the principles and rights of people with disabilities living in the community
- Demonstrated teaching ability
- Criminal Record Search (C.P.I.C.) clearance
Life Skills Worker
Provides one-to-one, one-to-two or group support services to children and adults with developmental disabilities. The focus of the program is learning life skills, gaining knowledge of the community, and positive development with an aim towards independence.
Life Skills Workers support and encourage clients’ efforts to accomplish their life skills improvement plans, as defined in their life skills contract with MAPCL. At the end of the contract, the goal is for clients to continue on their own with the new activities and responsibilities that the Worker helped to initiate. The hours of work are generally flexible, from morning to evening.
Education and Qualifications
- A diploma in human services or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of education and experience
- minimum one year experience in working with people who live with mental challenges
- A strong commitment to the philosophy of people with challenges living and working in the community
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, with an emphasis on demonstrating self-initiative, patience, maturity and tact
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of the local community’s resources and services
- Current Emergency 1st Aid and CPR Certificate
- Current TB test
- Demonstrated teaching ability
- Reliable car needed
- Class 5 driver’s license and good driving record

Day Support / Vocational Worker
Supports clients in a wide range of recreational, learning, and vocational activities, and provides in-home support to clients in need of physical and/or mental health care for a portion of their day.
Goals may include assisting clients in gaining knowledge of the community, personal management, gaining work experience, providing meaningful and enriching day-time activities, life skills training and positive development with an aim towards independence. Education and Qualifications
- A diploma in human services or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of education and experience
- Minimum one year experience in working with people who live with mental challenges
- A strong commitment to the principles of people with challenges living and working in the community
- Experience in theatre, wood crafts, and/or catering relative to line position
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team setting, with an emphasis on demonstrating self-initiative, patience, maturity and tact
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of the local community’s resources and services
- Good driving record
- Class 5 driver’s license; for some positions unrestricted class 4 driver’s license
- Current Emergency 1st Aid and CPR Certificate
- Current TB test
- Non-violent Crisis Intervention training
- Training in alternate methods of communication
- Some teaching ability
- A commitment to the principles and rights of people with disabilities living in the Community
- Good computer skills, in particular MS Word

Behaviour Interventionist
Is responsible for providing care and support in a group home or community environment or a private home environment of children and adults with behavioural and emotional challenges in addition to physical and/or cognitive needs.
Behaviour Interventionists provide behaviour management and skills training to persons served. They assist residential or day program/life skills staff as it relates to behaviour support plans. They liaise with Behaviour Consultants and other professionals to implement behavioural support plans and strategies, and they provide them with feedback. They perform all Residential Care Worker, Day Support Worker, or Life Skills Worker job duties, as appropriate.
Education and Qualifications
- A Certificate/diploma in a related human/social services field with course work including behavioural support strategies or related discipline
- Minimum one year recent related experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team setting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Knowledge of practices and principles of working in residential and community settings, and of the local community’s resources
- Knowledge of practices of Positive Behavioural Support
- Demonstrated ability to use various data collection instruments
- Demonstrated ability to implement clinical directions provided by Behavioural Consultants
- Ability to use effective teaching strategies to persons served
- A strong commitment to the philosophy of people with challenges living and working in the community
- Unrestricted class 4 driver’s license; clean driving record; may require access to a reliable vehicle with business insurance
- Current Emergency First Aid/CPR certification
- Current Non Violent Crisis Intervention training
- Current TB test clearance
- Criminal Record Search (C.P.I.C.) clearance
